Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774–1821) was the first native-born American to be canonized by the Catholic Church. After converting to Catholicism following the death of her husband, she dedicated her life to faith and service. She founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph, the first Catholic religious community for women in the U.S., which focused on education and caring for the poor. Her pioneering efforts in Catholic education helped shape the American Catholic Church. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1975, and her feast day is celebrated on January 4th.
