Saint Bernadette Soubirous (1844–1879) was a French peasant girl who is best known for her visions of the Virgin Mary in 1858 at the grotto of Massabielle near Lourdes, France. Bernadette was just 14 years old when she saw the Virgin Mary, who identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. Despite initial skepticism from church authorities and others, Bernadette's testimony was later accepted, and the site of the apparitions became a major pilgrimage destination, with millions of people visiting Lourdes each year in search of healing and spiritual renewal. Saint Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers in 1866, where she spent the remainder of her life in prayer and humility. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1933. Her feast day is celebrated on April 16th.
