Saint Juan Diego was a 16th-century indigenous Mexican man who is best known for his role in the apparition of the Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady of Guadalupe, in December 1531. Juan Diego was a humble peasant who experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City, where she asked him to have a church built in her honor. When he shared this message with the bishop, he was initially met with skepticism. However, after a second apparition and a miraculous sign of roses in winter, with an image of the Virgin imprinted on his tilma (cloak), the bishop believed and the shrine was constructed. Saint Juan Diego’s story is one of faith, obedience, and humility, and he was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002. His feast day is celebrated on December 9th.
