Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a 16th-century Spanish priest and the founder of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. Born in 1491 in the Basque region of Spain, Ignatius initially led a life focused on military ambitions. However, after a severe injury during battle, he experienced a spiritual conversion that led him to devote his life to God. Ignatius sought to reform the Church through education, missionary work, and spiritual direction. He is best known for his spiritual writings, particularly the Spiritual Exercises, a guide for prayer and meditation. The Jesuit order, under his leadership, became instrumental in the Counter-Reformation and the spread of Catholicism worldwide. Saint Ignatius’s feast day is celebrated on July 31st.
